Fire And Its Prevention In Canada (Genre: Society)

Fire Safety Tips - How to Prevent a Fire in Your Home

Fires are a major cause of death, destruction and worry in Canada. One of the main causes of this is that people have inadequate knowledge of fire safety and that they live in houses and other constructions made out of wood.

Some important facts about fire and its safety in Canada are as follows:

There are about 24,000 house fires each year in Canada, resulting in an average of 377 deaths and 3,048 injuries per year.

In Canada, 1 out of 100 preventable residential fires are fatal.

The #1 ignition source in all preventable house fires is cooking equipment that ignites clothing, oil or flammable liquids.

In fatal, preventable house fires, the #1 ignition source is smoking materials, such as cigarettes.

  • Fires are most likely to start in the kitchen, bedrooms and living room.
  • In fatal, preventable house fires, more than 1/3 of the homes didn’t have a working smoke detector.

Unattended cooking, electrical sparks, accidental fire are among the major reasons of fire in Canada. All this is a major toll on the safety of people and their belongings and the structures where they spend time.

It is high time the governing authorities and the fire departments take their activities to a new high that is more responsible and decorated. Each person who is willing to contribute and dedicated staff of the fire departments and also the Councilors, the MPPs, the MPs, other dignitaries should spend their time and resources in educating the masses.

Every 3 months a day should be celebrated as "Fire Prevention Day," in which it should emphasize and communicate the issues surrounding fire safety. With this twin objective of all year education and dedicated days it is my understanding that much would be achieved in curtailing fires and making the country a safe place.

It would be wise to install smoke alarms outside each bedroom and sleeping area, and on each level of your home, including the basement. Read and follow every step of the manufacturer's directions when you install your smoke alarms...investigate any false alarms, and have an escape plan in case of a real fire.

Fire safety is as much responsibility of the masses as it is of the authorities.
